SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT IN KOCHI, KERALA

OSA(Obstructive Sleep Apnea)

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep breathing disorder affecting 4 to 8% of the population. In obstructive sleep apnea, the airway narrows, collapses and breathing stops for brief repeated periods throughout the night this causes a reduction in the body’s Oxygen levels which in turn disrupts normal sleep cycles. 85% of sleep apnea sufferers are undiagnosed. It remains the most undiagnosed deadly problem in medicine.Take appropriate Sleep apnea treatment if you are diagnosed with it.  An open airway allows good restorative sleep. A blocked airway physically keeps air from entering the lungs. When maxilla and mandible (upper and lower Jaws) do not grow to their full potential the result is a child with compromised airway. Compromised airway causes sleep disordered breathing and nasal airflow resistance this leads to mouth breathing and fragmentation of sleep. Because anatomical abnormalities in the jaw, nasal passages, or airway might result in limited airflow during sleep, obstructive sleep apnea is more likely to occur in those with facial asymmetry.

Symptoms and Signs of OSA

  • Noisy, persistent snoring
  • Recurrent episodes of breathing cessation during sleep, often witnessed by a bed partner
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Excessive daytime fatigue
  • Morning headaches
  • Impaired concentration or memory

Dental sleep medicine offers effective treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), utilizing custom oral appliances to help maintain an open airway during sleep. Dental sleep medicine and orthodontics are related because orthodontic treatments, such airway-focused orthodontic interventions or mandibular advancement devices, can be very helpful in treating sleep-disordered breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnea.

At Vallamattam Dental Sleep Medicine (VDSM), we use oral appliances for obstructive sleep apnea treatment. With the help of CBCT scanning an airway focused orthodontist can diagnose the obstruction whether it is in the upper or lower part of the throat. If obstruction is in the lower part of the throat it’s because of the Tongue fall. Our oral sleep apnea treatment appliances prevent the airway from collapsing by holding the Tongue in position or by sliding the patient’s lower Jaw forward. So that patient can breath properly while they sleep.

FAQ

Dental sleep medicine focuses on using oral appliances to manage OSA. These devices reposition the jaw or tongue to keep the airway open during sleep.

MSE is used for OSA treatment by widening the upper jaw to increase airway space, particularly in the nasal passages. This expansion helps reduce airway obstruction, improving airflow and alleviating OSA symptoms.

The two main types are mandibular advancement devices (MADs) and tongue-retaining devices (TRDs). MADs are more commonly prescribed.

OSA can be diagnosed through CBCT(Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan. Another diagnostic method is sleep study.
